When Spain launched its Digital Nomad Visa programme in 2023, it was widely seen as one of the most accessible routes to legal residency. Processing times were relatively short, the approach to documents was flexible, and the approval rate was high. That reputation made the programme extremely popular very quickly.
In 2026 the picture looks different. Three years of practice have reshaped how applications are handled: requirements have become more formalised, and immigration authorities now examine applicants’ documents far more closely than they used to.
What the Digital Nomad Visa requires in 2026
The baseline document package today is considerably stricter than it was a few years ago.
1. A university degree. One of the key requirements is higher education confirmed by a diploma. In most cases the diploma must carry an apostille and, where necessary, be translated by a sworn translator in Spain. A diploma that has not been prepared correctly is a frequent cause of refusals and additional requests for information.
2. A contract with an employer or client. Depending on how you work, you will need either an employment contract or a service agreement. The document must be properly executed and translated by a sworn translator (traducción jurada). Authorities now look much more carefully at whether the working relationship is genuine, how payments are structured, and how stable the cooperation is.
3. A criminal record certificate. A standard requirement, but a critical one. The document needs an apostille and a sworn translation. Even technical errors in how it is prepared often lead to delays or refusals.
4. Proof that the company exists. If you work for a foreign company or cooperate with an overseas client, you will need to demonstrate that the company genuinely exists and is operating. That can include registration documents, company certificates, tax data and evidence of active operations.
5. Proof of income. For 2026 the benchmark for minimum income starts at €2,800+ per month, although the figure depends on how many family members are included in the application. Insufficient or unstable income is one of the most common sources of problems at the application stage.
The most underestimated detail: autónomo status after approval
Many applicants assume that a positive decision is the finish line. In practice, that is where some of the important obligations begin.
If you applied for residency as a self-employed professional (autónomo), you must register with the Spanish social security system (Seguridad Social) once your application is approved — and you need to do it fairly quickly.
For nationals of a number of countries this is technically difficult to arrange straight away, so in practice the mechanism of alta retroactiva — backdated registration — is often used.
Why this matters: without correct registration you may face difficulties when renewing your residency, additional checks, and in some cases even proceedings to revoke the permit.
2026: the first year of mass renewals
April 2026 marked a significant point for the programme. The first large wave of Digital Nomad Visa renewals has now begun, since three years have passed since the regime was launched.
That means for the first time there is real evidence of which mistakes become critical at renewal, and which details previously went unnoticed.
The takeaway
The Digital Nomad Visa remains one of the best routes to legal residency in Spain. But in 2026 it is no longer a story about submitting a couple of documents and quickly receiving a residence permit. Success now depends on the right strategy, correctly prepared documents, and a clear understanding of the obligations that follow approval.
