“I don’t have a university degree, so Spain is closed to me.” This is one of the most common myths heard during consultations. Many people never even start exploring their relocation options, convinced that a residence permit is impossible without a diploma.
The reality is different: for many types of residence in Spain, education plays no decisive role at all. Spanish immigration programmes assess more than a diploma — they look at financial standing, family ties, the purpose of the stay, employment relationships and a range of other circumstances.
Where a diploma is not part of the equation
Non-lucrative residence (No Lucrativa). The main criterion here is having sufficient funds to support yourself. A degree is not required.
Student visa. This route is also open to people without higher education. In fact, studying is often the first step towards further legalisation in the country.
Residence for family members of EU citizens. This is a separate category, where the basis for obtaining status is the family relationship itself, not the level of education.
Work. Not every job position in Spain presupposes a diploma. Many employers are interested in employees with experience and practical skills, not only formal education.
The question worth asking instead
So the question is not whether you hold a degree. The question is which route to legal residence fits your particular situation. Very often it turns out that a path to a residence permit exists even when the person was convinced of the opposite.
