10 things you should know before choosing your career path
There is an increasing educational offer, so you must be very clear about your preferences and your best skills for it. Three aspects are key when making such an important decision: knowing yourself, knowing your access options and evaluating what each career offers you.
1) Strengths and weaknesses:
It is very important that you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses. They will be key when deciding which studies you are more suited and for which you are not.
2) Interests and hobbies:
They can determine what careers you are heading toward. We will always veer towards something that is related to our personal hobbies.
3) Take an evaluation test:
It can help you discover things about yourself that you hadn't noticed. In addition, it can help you discover careers that you have not even heard of and that can fit your profile.
4) Dive beyond the 'name' of the course:
If many people knew a prior what they know at the end of a career, they would probably change their choice. Research each area of knowledge and all the branches of study it offers. So you can make a better choice and perhaps specialize in a certain area rather than a general degree.
5) Consult with a counselor:
In all schools and institutes there is the figure of the professional counselor. He or she will be in charge of informing you and advising you on the range of options that open up to you. It can be a very useful tool, especially if you are not very clear where to start searching.
6) Go to the centers where the studies that interest you are taught:
Although it may seem the opposite, it is not the same to study a career at one university or another. Each center has its own characteristics and has more or less reputable teachers in some subjects than others. Find out which one is the ideal university to study what you want.
7) Beware of fashions:
It may sound like a joke, but a simple television series can influence many young people when choosing a professional future. Many doctors, journalists or lawyers went out to the labor market with television references, and not all of them did so by vocation; so be guided by your own tastes not what seems ‘on trend’..
8) Duration and difficulty:
You must be clear if you want to study a career of a few years to enter the labor market soon or you are one of those who prefer longer careers. Some courses take only 3 years where as others can take up to 6 or 8. Research well the duration of your preferred course.
9) Languages:
It is an aspect of vital importance in the current job market. In a globalized world like ours, if we do not dominate them they can be a difficult barrier to overcome. Take up a new language that is widely spoken and may enhance your working opportunities after your degree.
10) Professional opportunities:
Although no one can guarantee you a job, there are certain studies that, due to their flexibility or high preparation, offer more opportunities for job placement. Keep that in mind. It is a factor that will determine the effort you will have to make to get a job.
These ten tips are meant to be a useful guide to make your college career easier to carry and are just meant to help you make the best choice.
