EU to Expand Erasmus+ Programme in Next 7 Years – Institutions
Agree to Invest Over €26 Billion
After negotiations between the European Parliament and the German presidency of the Council, up to 12 million students will be able to participate in the Erasmus+ in the next seven years.
The number of students will be tripled making the programme more inclusive, not only by covering higher education but also all types and levels of education and training.
A budget of €24.57 billion in current prices plus €1.7 billion in 2018 prices, from which 83 per cent will go to activities in the area of education and training, 10.3 per cent to actions in the area of youth and 1.9 per cent to sport-related activities has been agreed upon.
MEPs, officials, and even political parties have also supported the deal through their official social media accounts by saying how #ERASMUS+ has changed lives over the last number of years.
Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth stated that Erasmus+ enhanced the personal, social and professional development of more than 10 million people, almost half of them between 2014 and 2020.
The New Erasmus+ 2021-2027
There are 3 action areas to the Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027 with the following aims:
Education and training action area: the promotion of learning mobility of individuals and groups
Field of youth: the promotion of non-formal and informal learning mobility and active
participation among young people
Field of sports: the promotion of learning mobility of sport staff
The EU intends to achieve cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level
of organisations and policies in all three fields listed above.
Plans are also in place to facilitate the participation of smaller organisations and people with
fewer opportunities, those with disabilities and migrants, but also EU citizens living in remote
areas.
The new Erasmus+ will also contribute to the achievement of the EU’s climate spending targets
and reduce its own environmental footprint, i.e., by promoting climate-friendly means of
transportation for beneficiaries.
Thanks to more user-friendly IT systems. There will be less paperwork and the process will be a
lot easier.
