This is a project prepared by the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Institute for Economic Research (IVIE), which analyses 72 Spanish universities (48 public and 24 private) and offers a profile of the results of each institution.
According to this ninth edition of the U-Ranking, the Pompeu Fabra University repeats in the first place on the list. But for the first time it doesn´t appear alone in this position and shares this leadership with the Carlos III University of Madrid and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. This leading group is followed by the one made up of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Polytechnic of Valencia.
Behind is a block of seven universities:
- University of Deusto
- University of Navarra
- Autonomous University of Madrid
- University of Cantabria
- Polytechnic of Madrid
- University Barcelona
- Rovira i Virgili University.
The results obtained to prepare this ranking are based on the analysis of 20 indicators from four areas (access to resources, production obtained, quality and internationalization of activities) related to teaching and research and innovation.
Changes in grades
According to the analysis, in 10 years the offer of degrees has grown by 44.4% in Spain at an average annual rate of 3.8%. Thus, between the 2010-2011 and 2020-2021 academic years, 1,760 new degrees were incorporated (987 degrees and 773 double degrees) which, together with the extinction of 629, yields a balance of 1,131 more degrees in the last year compared to ago ten years.
The rate of creation of new degrees is almost three times greater than that of extinction, which explains the global increase registered and brings the percentage of current degrees that are recently created to 40.9%. Most of the new degrees already existed in the Spanish University System (SUE), but there are 190 -between degrees and double degrees- that are newly created.
Private universities have increased their degrees to almost a thousand (999), compared to 584 in the 2010-2011 academic year, which represents a growth of 41%. This balance is the result of a higher rate of creation of degrees but also a greater intensity of closings than public ones, which, in both directions, move more slowly.
